These ships were made in Spain and Portugal. They were used from the 1500s to the 1700s.

Galleons were built for many jobs. Some carried goods to trade. Others were used as warships. They were better for fighting than older ships called carracks. This was because galleons were cheaper to build. They were also stronger and carried more guns. One famous ship, the São João Baptista, carried 366 guns!

These ships used the wind to move. They had three or four masts. The masts held many sails. Most sails were square. The last mast often had a lateen sail. A lateen sail is a sail shaped like a triangle.

Galleons were built with strong wood. Workers used oak for the bottom part. They used pine for the tall masts. Many experts worked for months to build one ship. Building them cost a lot of money. Because of this, rich people often paid to help build them.
