A galleon was a large, multi-decked sailing ship used for many different jobs.

These ships were very important during the Age of Sail from the 1500s to the 1700s. They were used as armed cargo carriers to move goods across the ocean. They were also used as warships to fight in big battles. Because they were so useful, a single ship might change roles several times. A ship might carry trade goods one year and fight in a war the next.

Galleons worked by using the wind to move across the water. They were powered entirely by sails attached to three or four masts.

The front masts usually had square sails to catch the wind. The very last mast often used a lateen sail, which is a triangular sail. This design helped the ship move more easily. To build them, workers used strong materials like oak for the bottom and pine for the masts.

Hundreds of experts like carpenters and blacksmiths worked for months to finish one ship.

In the 1500s, ship design began to change to make sailing better.

Older ships called carracks were often very large but hard to move. To improve this, builders made galleons longer, lower, and narrower. This made them much more stable in the ocean. It also helped them move faster because they had less wind resistance. Spanish captains Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Álvaro de Bazán helped design the best versions in the 1550s. They combined the long shape of older vessels with new, stronger parts.

There are many amazing facts about the size and strength of these ships.

Most galleons were under 500 tons, but some were much larger. The Manila galleons could reach a weight of 2,000 tons. One famous Portuguese ship, the São João Baptista, was built in 1534. It was a huge 1,000-ton ship that carried 366 bronze guns. Another ship, the San Pelayo, carried 77 crew members and 317 soldiers in 1565. These ships were very expensive to build. Often, groups of wealthy businessmen pooled their money together to pay for them.

Many famous stories in history involve these powerful vessels.

Sir Francis Drake used the Golden Hind to sail around the entire world. In 1588, galleons were the main ships used during the fight between England and Spain. The English used special "race-built" galleons to help them win. Even though the trips were long and hard, these ships connected different parts of the world. They were the main tools for trade and exploration for over 150 years.
