Age of Sail

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

For a long time, sailing ships ruled the seas. This period is called the Age of Sail. It began around the 15th or 16th century. These ships used wind to move across the ocean. They carried goods and fought in wars.

During this time, people also used naval artillery. This means they put large guns on ships. In the 15th century, ships began to explore new lands. This was part of the Age of Discovery. One special time was the Golden Age of Sail. During this time, sailing ships grew very large and complex.

Soon, things began to change. People built ships that used steam power. Steam ships were faster than wind ships. They did not have to wait for the wind. In 1871, a ship called HMS Devastation was built. It was a large warship that did not use sails.

Because steam ships were so fast, sailing ships mostly disappeared. They were used for small jobs like fishing. Today, some people want to use wind again. Using wind can help save fuel and protect our world.
