He was born around 570 BC. For a long time, a tyrant named Hippias ruled Athens. A tyrant is a leader with total power. Cleisthenes worked to end this rule. With help from Sparta, he helped the people take control. He became a leader in 508 BC.

Cleisthenes wanted to make Athens more fair. He changed how people were grouped. Before, groups were based on family. He made ten new tribes based on where people lived. This gave more power to the citizens. He also used sortition. This is a way to pick leaders by random chance. This stopped rich families from holding all the power.

He also started a rule called ostracism.

Citizens could vote to send a person away for ten years. They used pieces of broken pottery to vote. This was to stop anyone from becoming a tyrant. Cleisthenes called his new way isonomia. This means equal rights under the law. Because of him, Athens began to use democracy.
