Athens had become a very strong empire. It used money from its allies to build a great navy. This growth made the Spartans feel very worried. The tension between these two sides eventually led to war.

The fighting happened in four different parts. The first part was the Archidamian War.

It began when King Archidamus II of Sparta invaded the land near Athens. Later, the two sides signed the Peace of Nicias in 421 BC. The second part was the Argive War. This was a smaller fight between Sparta and its rivals. The third part was the Sicilian Expedition. Athens tried to conquer Syracuse but lost almost its entire navy.

The final part was the Decelean War.

History tells us many details about these events. The most famous writer was Thucydides. He was an Athenian who fought in the war.

He wrote a detailed history based on what he saw. His work ends in 411 BC, so it is not complete. A writer named Xenophon finished the story later. He wrote about how the war ended.

Another writer, Plutarch, wrote about the famous leaders. He looked at the character and choices of men like Pericles and Lysander. These stories help us understand the people involved.

Many specific things happened during these years. In 425 BC, Athens had a victory at Sphacteria. However, they lost to Thebes at Delium in 424 BC. In 413 BC, the Persian Empire joined the war to help Sparta. This changed everything for the Athenian navy.

Sparta used Persian money to build a fleet. In 405 BC, the Spartan leader Lysander won a huge battle at Aegospotamos. This victory broke the power of the Delian League. Athens finally fell in 404 BC.

The war was very expensive for everyone. Many people in the Peloponnese became poor. Athens was also devastated and lost its wealth. The way cities fought also changed. Instead of small battles, it became a total war. This conflict marked the end of the golden age of Greece.
