He led a huge army to do this. Modern scholars believe his army had between 120,000 and 300,000 soldiers.

This battle was a very important moment in history. It showed how a smaller group can stand against a much larger force.

The Greeks had a plan to stop the Persian advance.

An Athenian leader named Themistocles suggested a two-part strategy. The Greeks would block the Persian army at a narrow mountain pass. At the same time, they would block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium.

This way, the Persians could not move easily by land or by sea. The narrow space at Thermopylae was perfect for this job. It meant the large Persian army could not use all its soldiers at once.

This conflict began because of past disagreements between Persia and Greece.

Years earlier, a Persian king named Darius I tried to invade Greece. He failed after the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. When Xerxes I took the throne, he decided to try again. He prepared for a full-scale invasion with great care. He even built bridges and canals to help his troops move. The Greeks decided to form an alliance to protect their homes.

A Greek force of about 7,000 men marched to the pass.

For two days, the Greeks held the narrow road successfully. However, a local man named Ephialtes told the Persians about a secret path. This path allowed the Persians to go around the Greeks.

Leonidas realized his force was being surrounded by the enemy.

To save the rest of the army, Leonidas sent most men away.
