He served as the Prime Minister of Greece four times. He also served two terms as the President of the Third Hellenic Republic. His political career spanned seven different decades. Karamanlis was a statesman who helped guide Greece through periods of growth and major political change. He is often remembered for his efforts to connect Greece to the rest of Europe.

Karamanlis was born in 1907 in the village of Proti, near Serres.

At that time, the Macedonia region was part of the Ottoman Empire. He became a Greek citizen in 1913 after the region was annexed by Greece. His father, Georgios Karamanlis, was a teacher and a soldier. After studying law in Athens, Karamanlis entered politics in 1936. He was elected to the Hellenic Parliament at the age of 28 as a member of the conservative People's Party.

Following World War II, Karamanlis rose quickly through the political ranks. In 1947, he served as the Minister for Labour. By 1952, he was the Minister for Public Works in the administration of Alexandros Papagos. He gained a reputation for efficiency in building roads and managing American aid. When Papagos died in 1955, King Paul appointed Karamanlis as Prime Minister. This appointment surprised many because Karamanlis was only 48 years old.

During his first period as Prime Minister, Karamanlis focused on economic development. He launched a five-year plan from 1959 to 1964. This plan emphasized industrial production, infrastructure, and tourism. These efforts helped create a period of rapid growth known as the post-war Greek economic miracle. He also worked on social changes, such as implementing full voting rights for women. In foreign policy, he moved away from the goal of joining Cyprus with Greece. Instead, he helped negotiate the independence of Cyprus through the Zurich Agreement in 1958.

His career faced significant challenges and interruptions. In 1963, Karamanlis resigned due to political crises and disagreements with King Paul. He lived in self-imposed exile in Paris for eleven years. During this time, a military dictatorship ruled Greece following a coup in 1967. Karamanlis also faced the Merten affair, where a former Nazi official made unproven accusations against him. Karamanlis rejected these claims as false and used them to highlight political smear campaigns. He eventually returned to Greece in 1974 after the military rule ended.

Upon his return, Karamanlis led a period called the Metapolitefsi. This was the transition of Greece back into a pluralist democracy. His party, New Democracy, won a large victory in the November 1974 elections. Following this, a plebiscite was held to abolish the monarchy. This established the Third Hellenic Republic, and Karamanlis became its leader. He helped decriminalize the Communist Party to allow for more political diversity.

One of Karamanlis's greatest achievements was his "European vision." He believed that joining the European Economic Community (EEC) was Greece's destiny. He lobbied many European leaders to support this goal. In 1961, Greece signed a treaty of association with the EEC. This made Greece the first country outside the original six members to become an associate member.

In 1981, he oversaw Greece's formal entry into the EEC. This helped end Greece's economic isolation and reduced its dependence on outside aid.

In 1980, Karamanlis moved from being Prime Minister to being the President of the Republic. He served in this role until 1985, and was later elected again in 1990. He remained in politics until his retirement in 1995. Karamanlis died in 1998 at the age of 91. His life's work helped shape the modern democratic and European identity of Greece.
