He served as the ninth President of Turkey from 1993 to 2000. Before his presidency, he held the office of Prime Minister seven different times. His political career spanned several decades of significant change in Turkey. He led the Justice Party (AP) from 1964 to 1980. Later, he led the True Path Party (DYP) from 1987 to 1993. Demirel was born on November 1, 1924, in the village of İslamköy.

His childhood was spent working as a shepherd. This background was quite different from the traditional political elite in Turkey. Most leaders came from military, bureaucratic, or wealthy landowning families. Demirel used his humble roots to connect with the rural masses. He projected an image of a proud Muslim to build trust. He often mentioned his father's Hajj and the religious traditions of his home. This helped him gain a strong following among conservative voters.

Before his rise in politics, Demirel established a successful career in engineering.

He graduated from Istanbul Technical University in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering. He later traveled to the United States for postgraduate studies. He focused on irrigation, electrical technologies, and dam construction. In 1955, he became the director general of the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ). In this role, he supervised the construction of power plants and irrigation facilities. He even served as a part-time lecturer at Middle East Technical University. His technical expertise provided a foundation for his later work in national development.

Demirel entered politics through the Justice Party, which replaced the banned Democrat Party.

He was elected chairman of the party in 1964 after defeating Sadettin Bilgiç. In 1965, he became the youngest Prime Minister in Turkish history at age 40. During his early years in office, he oversaw major infrastructure projects. These included the Keban Dam and the Bosphorus Bridge. He also worked on an oil pipeline between Batman and İskenderun. His economic reforms helped to stabilize inflation and grow the economy. However, his first term ended due to the 1971 military coup d'état.

The 1970s were a period of intense political instability for Demirel. He led several coalition governments known as the Nationalist Front. The First Nationalist Front was formed in 1971 with several different parties. The Second Nationalist Front followed in 1977, but it also collapsed. These years were marked by economic depression and rising global petrol prices. Political violence also increased during this decade. For example, 42 people died during a May Day rally in 1977. In 1980, another military coup occurred. This event resulted in Demirel being banned from participating in politics for a period of time.

Demirel eventually returned to the political stage in 1987. He assumed leadership of the True Path Party and won the 1991 general election. He formed a coalition government with the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP). This marked his fifth and final term as Prime Minister. Following the sudden death of President Turgut Özal, Demirel ran for the presidency. He won the 1993 election and served as the ninth President of Turkey. He remained in this role until the year 2000. His leadership helped guide the nation through a transformative era.

Demirel's political legacy is defined by his long periods of service.

His life remains a significant chapter in the history of Turkish democracy and engineering.
