Özal is remembered for transforming the Turkish economy through neoliberalism. This term describes a system that favors free markets and less government control. He also sought to position Turkey as a modern, scientific bridge between Europe and Asia.

Özal's economic strategy focused on rapid liberalization and export-driven growth. He abolished capital controls, which allowed citizens to exchange foreign currency freely. He also implemented an aggressive policy known as "Export-or-Die." This encouraged Turkish businesses to sell goods to international markets.

As a result, many Turkish construction companies grew immensely. For example, firms like Enka and Tekfen earned roughly $20 billion in contracts. These contracts came from markets in Libya and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries during the 1980s and 1990s.

His political career was shaped by several distinct roles and stages. He began as an electrical engineer after graduating from Istanbul Technical University in 1950. He studied engineering management in the United States between 1952 and 1953. Before entering high politics, he worked for the World Bank from 1971 to 1973. In 1979, he became a leader for a major miners' trade union. He also served as an undersecretary to Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel until the 1980 military coup.

Although he faced challenges like rising inflation and conflict with Kurdish separatists, he was re-elected in 1987. During his leadership, he also established the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEİK) in 1986. This organization helped manage Turkey's growing international business connections.

Özal's presidency was marked by significant shifts in foreign policy. He worked to build alliances with Turkic Republics following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He also maintained close ties with U.S. President George H. W. Bush.

This relationship was particularly important during the Gulf War. Özal supported the war effort and urged the United States to take action against Iraq. Additionally, he worked to prevent war with Greece following the Şimşek Incident. He also briefly allowed Bulgarian Turks to emigrate to Turkey.

Throughout his life, Özal navigated complex social and political disputes. He attempted to find peace through negotiations with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). In the early 1990s, these talks led to a ceasefire declaration on March 17, 1993. He also studied the historical issue of the Armenian genocide. He believed that Turkey's policy of denial harmed its international relations. He wanted to reach a compromise through negotiation to improve Turkey's standing in the world.

Özal's life ended unexpectedly while he was still in office. He died on April 17, 1993. His death was considered suspicious by some observers. An exhumation of his body in 2012 provided evidence of poisoning, though the exact cause remained unclear.
