She lived in a place called Cyzicus in the Roman Empire. Most people remember her for her talent with a paintbrush. She was also a skilled ivory carver. Iaia was a very special person in her time. She was a woman artist in a world of men. She often chose to paint portraits of other women. This helped her stand out as a creator.

Working as an artist required great speed and skill. A writer named Pliny the Elder wrote about her. He said no one had a quicker hand at painting. Iaia was faster than her male rivals, Sopolis and Dionysius. Because she worked so quickly, she earned more money. This was a big achievement for her. Pliny said she painted a large picture of an old woman. He also said she painted a self-portrait of herself. These details show how much people valued her work.

Iaia lived during the time of Marcus Terentius Varro. This was around the 1st century BC. She likely moved to the city of Rome for work. Rome had a high demand for new art. She stayed unmarried throughout her whole life. Some writers used different names for her. Boccaccio called her "Marcia" in his book about famous women. He might have confused her with a different person. Other people called her Lala, Lalla, or Maia.

History tells us about a few other women artists too. Pliny the Elder listed four other names. These were Timarete, Irene, Aristarete, and Olympias. Some people think a fifth woman named Calypso was also an artist. Iaia remains a very important name in art history. Her name appears on the Heritage Floor by Judy Chicago. This is a special art piece that honors many people. She is one of the few women from ancient times we know about.

Modern writers still find Iaia very interesting today. She has even become a character in stories. Steven Saylor wrote a novel called Arms of Nemesis in 1992. In his book, she paints near the Bay of Naples. The writer Sabrina Gatti also used her for inspiration. Gatti wrote a novel called Shining Harmony in 2017. She also wrote a book of poems in 2018. These stories show that Iaia's life still moves our hearts. She reminds us that great talent can last forever.
