Roman artists often copied Greek models to learn new skills. They used books and teaching to study these older styles. Many artists even came from Greek colonies or provinces. They mastered many techniques like portrait painting and landscape art. They also used things like perspective to show depth. Even though they copied, they were still very creative.

Most of our wall paintings come from Pompeii and Herculaneum. These cities were destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. This preserved many beautiful frescoes for us to see today. We also find portraits on wood in Roman Egypt. These are called Fayum mummy portraits. They were painted on wood and placed on mummies.

Roman art changed as the empire grew and changed.

In the late empire, the art became more religious. Between 350 and 500 AD, wall paintings and mosaics became very popular. When the capital moved to Constantinople, the art took on Eastern influences. This created the Byzantine style of art. Later, Emperor Justinian ordered famous mosaics to be made. This was a final burst of great Roman art.
