Romanos the Melodist was a very important composer and songwriter. He lived a long time ago during the sixth century. He is known as a central figure in Byzantine music history. People called him the "Pindar of rhythmic poetry" because of his skill. He was famous for writing a special kind of hymn. These hymns are called kontakia, which are poetic sermons set to music.

A kontakion has a very specific way it works. It starts with a short prelude in a unique rhythm. Then, it moves into many stanzas that use the same meter. Each stanza has a repeating part called a refrain. These songs can be quite long, with 18 to 30 verses. The verses often use an acrostic, which is a pattern with letters. When these hymns were sung to a special melody, they were called idiomelon.

There is a famous legend about how he became a great singer. It is said he was not a good reader or singer at first. One night in the year 518, he read so poorly that he felt very sad. While he slept, the Mother of God appeared to him in a dream. She gave him a scroll to eat. When he woke up, he sang with a beautiful, clear voice. His first song was a masterpiece about the birth of Christ.
