He was a master of Byzantine chant. This is a special type of religious music. People called him "Angel-voiced" because of his amazing singing. His music was very important to many different groups of people. Today, musicians in Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Macedonia, and Albania still respect his work. He was so highly regarded that the Eastern Orthodox Church named him a saint. His special feast day is celebrated on October 1.

Koukouzeles changed the way people sang in church. He created a new, beautiful style called kalophonic singing. This style was based on the sticherarion, which is a book of hymns. He also created a special tool to help singers learn. This tool was a wheel called a trochos. It was used as a way to teach the solfège, or the notes of the music. This helped singers master the complex melodies he created. His musical ideas were so strong that they started a whole school of followers.

We do not know everything about his life. Some historians think he lived between the 12th and 15th centuries. Most experts believe he lived in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. One story says he was born in Dyrrhachium, which is now Durrës in Albania. This story says he had a Bulgarian mother and a Greek father. However, other historians think he might have been born in Anatolia. We know his real last name was Papadopoulos. He likely became a monk and changed his name to Ioannikios.

Koukouzeles was a very talented student. He studied under a teacher named Xenos Koronis. He also learned from a cantor named John Glykes. Because he was so skilled, he was accepted into the imperial court school in Constantinople. He became a favorite of the Byzantine emperor. He was a principal choir chanter at the court. Later, he moved to Mount Athos to live a monastic life at the Great Lavra.

His musical legacy is still very large today. Some of his compositions are incredibly long and difficult to sing. Some old exercise books for singers reached 1,900 pages! Because his music is so complex, modern books often make shorter versions. His name is remembered in many places around the world. A music school in Durrës is named Shkolla Jon Kukuzeli. Even a place in Antarctica called Kukuzel Cove is named after him.
