He lived in the sixth century. He was born in Syria to a Jewish family. Later, he moved to the city of Constantinople. He became a deacon in the church there.

Romanos wrote special songs called kontakia. A kontakion is a poetic sermon set to music. These songs use many verses and a repeating refrain. Some of his songs were very long. They had between 18 and 30 verses. He is said to have written over 1,000 of these hymns. We still have about 89 of his works today. Many people believe about 60 of them are his real works.

One legend says Romanos was not a good singer at first. He once read so poorly that he felt very sad. While he slept, the Mother of God appeared in a dream. She gave him a scroll to eat. When he woke up, he sang with a beautiful, clear voice. His first song was about the birth of Christ. People were amazed by his skill and his deep words. Today, he is the patron saint of music in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
