John was a monk and a priest. He lived in a monastery near Jerusalem. He was a very smart man. He studied law, music, and many other things. Some people called him a "golden speaker." This was because of his great words.

John wrote many books. He also wrote special songs called hymns. People still sing these songs in church today. He is most famous for defending holy icons. Icons are sacred images used in worship. At that time, some leaders did not want people to use them. John wrote books to explain why they were important.
