John Philoponus was a thinker from Alexandria. He lived a long time ago. He was a scholar and a teacher. His name means "lover of toil." This means he worked very hard.

John studied how the world works. Most people then followed the ideas of Aristotle. But John had his own ideas. He thought about how objects move. He said a mover gives energy to an object. This energy helps the object keep moving. This idea is like what we call inertia today.

John also wrote about religion. He was a Christian. He believed God made the whole world. He argued that the world was not always here. He also thought the stars were not gods.

Some people did not like his ideas. They called him a heretic. This made it hard for his books to spread. But his work did not die out. Many people studied his books in Arabic. Later, his ideas reached Europe. He helped change how we think about science. Even the scientist Galileo used his ideas. John helped start a new way of thinking.
