Many people had different views on this topic. Some people called Mary the "God-bearer." This means they believed God was born through her. Nestorius was careful with these words. He suggested the name "Christ-bearer" instead. He wanted to show that the divine and human parts of Jesus were distinct. This caused a large dispute with Cyril of Alexandria. Cyril and other leaders called Nestorius a heretic. A heretic is someone whose ideas go against church rules.

In the year 431, a group of bishops met at the Council of Ephesus. They decided Nestorius was wrong. They removed him from his job. Later, the Emperor sent Nestorius to live in Egypt. He lived in a place called an oasis. He wrote a book called the Bazaar of Heracleides to defend his views. Some groups, like the Church of the East, still honor his teachings today.
