Zephyrinus was a leader in Rome. He was the bishop of Rome. He led the Church for 18 years. He started his work in the year 199. He died on December 20, 217.

Life was hard for his people. An emperor named Septimius Severus made strict rules. These rules made it hard to join the Christian faith. Zephyrinus helped his people feel safe during this time. Some people called him a support for his flock.

Zephyrinus also fought for his beliefs. He spoke up against new ideas that he thought were wrong. These ideas are called heresies. He worked to defend the idea that Christ was God. Some people even called him a martyr. A martyr is someone who suffers for their faith. He did not die for his faith, but he felt much mental pain.

After he died, Callixtus I became the new leader. Callixtus was a close advisor to Zephyrinus. Many churches still honor Zephyrinus today. Some celebrate his day on August 26. Other churches celebrate him on December 20.
