Irenaeus was a Greek leader from a place called Smyrna.

He lived during the second century. He was raised in a Christian family. Later, he became a bishop in the city of Lyon.

Irenaeus spent much of his life teaching others. He wanted to help people understand their faith. At that time, some groups held different ideas. These groups were called Gnostics. They believed in secret wisdom. Irenaeus wrote a famous book to answer them. It is called Against Heresies.

In his book, he shared three main ideas. He pointed to holy books. He pointed to traditions from the apostles. He also pointed to the work of new leaders. Irenaeus was the first to say that four books are essential. These are the four Gospels. He believed Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were all needed.
