Léonin

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Léonin was a famous music maker from long ago. He likely lived in Paris. He worked at the Notre-Dame Cathedral. He was a leader in a group called the Notre Dame school. This group made a style of music called ars antiqua.

Léonin is known for a big book of music. It is called the Magnus Liber, which means "great book." He wrote this book to help with church services. The music in the book uses organum. This is a style where voices sing together. Most of his music has two voices.

Léonin did something very new for his time. He helped create a way to show rhythm. Rhythm is the beat of the music. He may have even made a new way to write these beats down. This helped the music sound very organized.

An old writer named Anonymous IV called him a great composer. This writer said Léonin was the best at making organum. His music was used for a long time. Later, a man named Perotin changed some of it. Perotin made new parts for the music. But people still think Léonin's work was very special.
