He lived in Paris and worked near the Notre Dame cathedral. Most music back then had only one melody. Pérotin changed how people made music. He added more voices to the songs. Before him, most music had just two voices. He made music with three or even four voices singing at once.

Pérotin was a great teacher. People called him Magister Perotinus. This means "Pérotin the Master." Some people even called him "the Great." He was very good at a style called descant. In this style, the voices move with a regular beat. He also made music called conductus. These songs could have two or three voices.

His music was kept in a big book. This book is called the Magnus Liber Organi. It helped singers across Europe use the same music. His work helped start new ways to write music. He made rhythm just as important as the notes. This helped music last for a very long time.
