He lived and worked near the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Most music in his time had only one melody. This was called monophonic music. Pérotin changed everything by adding more voices to the songs. This new way of making music is called polyphony. He was the most important member of the Notre Dame school. This was a group of composers working in Paris from about 1160 to 1250. His work helped start the era of European church music.

Pérotin used many different ways to build his songs. He worked with a composer named Léonin. Léonin had made a big book called the Magnus Liber Organi. This book held music for two voices. Pérotin took these ideas and made them much bigger. He created music with three voices, called tripla. He also made music with four voices, called quadrupla. One famous example is his song Viderunt omnes. He also wrote a style called conductus. Some of these had two voices, while others had three.

We do not know every detail about Pérotin's life. Most of what we know comes from a student named Anonymous IV. This student wrote notes about Pérotin in a book. He called him Magister Perotinus, which means Pérotin the Master. This title shows he was licensed to teach others. Some people even called him Pérotinus Magnus, or Pérotin the Great. He likely lived from around 1155 to about 1205. He was probably French. His name might be a short version of the name Peter.

Pérotin's music was very special because it had rhythm. Before him, music did not always have a steady beat. He helped make music that could be measured in time. This is called musica mensurabilis. He also helped change how music was written down. Instead of just singing, musicians began to write notes on parchment. This helped the music stay the same for a long time. His music spread all across Europe. It was used in the choir of the Notre Dame cathedral.

His work connects to the music we hear today. He helped move music from just being performed to being recorded. By writing it down, he helped create the idea of a composer. A composer is a person who writes original music. His styles helped lead to new forms like the motet. The motet became a very important type of music in his time. Even hundreds of years later, people still study his notes. He laid the foundation for how many people make music now. His songs helped change the history of sound forever.
