A composer is someone who writes music for others to play. He is known for a special style called minimalism. This music often feels very calm and steady. Many people call his style "holy minimalism" because it feels spiritual. His music is played in big concert halls all over the world. In fact, he was the most performed living composer from 2011 to 2018. He held this top spot again in 2022 and 2025.

His music uses a unique way of writing called tintinnabuli. This word means "like the ringing of bells." He invented this method to make music that sounds clear and simple. The music uses basic harmonies and single, unadorned notes. These notes often sound like bells ringing in the distance. Each syllable of a word is given a specific pitch and length. This helps him create a phrase that feels very natural. The rhythm stays steady and does not change speed quickly.

Pärt was born in Paide, Estonia, on September 11, 1935. As a young boy, he learned to play the piano. His family's piano was broken in the middle section. Because of this, he practiced playing only the high and low notes. He started formal music school in Rakvere when he was seven. Later, he studied at the Tallinn Music Middle School. He also served in an army band playing the oboe and percussion. He graduated from the Tallinn Conservatory in 1963.

His life as a composer has not always been easy. In the 1960s, he wrote a piece called Credo. This work used religious themes that the Soviet leaders did not like. Because of this, his music was banned from concert halls. For eight years, he stopped writing music almost entirely. During this quiet time, he studied very old music from the 1300s and 1500s. He looked at Gregorian chant to find a new way to write. He eventually converted to Orthodox Christianity in 1972.

Today, Pärt's work connects many different kinds of people. His famous piece Spiegel im Spiegel is often used in movies. He has received many honors for his talent and skill. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named him to a special council for culture. He has even been invited to perform at many grand festivals. His music is not just for Estonia, but for the whole world. People listen to his works like Fratres and Magnificat to find peace. The Arvo Pärt Centre in Laulasmaa opened to the public in 2018.
