He is a leader in a style called minimal music. This music uses patterns that repeat many times. Reich wants listeners to hear how the music changes. He calls this a perceptible process. This means the listener can actually hear the music moving and changing. His music is very special because it focuses on rhythm and steady patterns. Many people say he changed the history of music forever.

One way he makes music is through phase shifting. In this method, one player repeats a musical phrase. Another player plays the same phrase but slightly faster. This makes the two parts slide out of sync. This creates new musical patterns as they move. He first tried this using tape loops. He used these loops in early works like It's Gonna Rain from 1965. He also used them in a piece called Come Out in 1966. Later, he moved from tape to live instruments.

In 1972, he wrote Clapping Music for people to play with their hands. He also traveled to Ghana in 1970 to study drumming. This helped him write his big piece called Drumming. Another landmark is Music for 18 Musicians from 1976. In the 1980s, his music became more serious. He wrote Different Trains in 1988 using historical themes.

His music connects to many different types of sounds. His ideas about rhythm and loops influenced rock music. They also influenced modern electronic music. Some rock bands, like Sonic Youth, have even played his ideas. He studied many different styles like Balinese gamelan music. He also used ideas from the Baroque period in his work. Even the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein inspired his music. Reich's work is like a living laboratory of sound. His ensemble, Steve Reich and Musicians, still plays his music today.
