Steve Reich is a famous American composer.

He is a leader in a style called minimal music. This music uses patterns that repeat many times. Reich wants listeners to hear how the music changes. He calls this a perceptible process.

One way he makes music is through phase shifting. In this method, one player repeats a pattern. Another player plays the same pattern but slightly faster. This makes the two parts slide out of sync. It creates new sounds as they move. He first tried this using tape loops. He also used it with live instruments. In Piano Phase, two players use pianos to make this effect.

Reich also wrote Clapping Music. In this piece, people use their hands to clap patterns. This shows how music can be made with just the human body. He later studied music in Ghana. This helped him write Drumming, a big piece for percussion. His work has changed the history of music. It has influenced rock and electronic music too.
