He worked in many different cities and for many powerful leaders. He served the Malatesta family in Italy in places like Rimini and Pesaro. In 1428, he moved to Rome to join the papal choir. This was the most important group of singers in Europe. He served under Pope Martin V and then Pope Eugene IV. He also worked for the Duke of Savoy and the House of Este. His travels helped him create a special, worldly style of music.

His music changed how people thought about sound and melody. He mixed different styles together to make something new. He was influenced by the English style of a man named John Dunstaple. Du Fay also learned from the techniques of younger musicians. These included famous names like Johannes Ockeghem and Antoine Busnois. Even though he lived a long time ago, his influence lasted. He helped shape the way music was written for many years.
