Zarlino studied how to make musical notes sound right together. He wrote about something called meantone tuning. This is a way to set the pitch of instruments. He described different types like 2/7-comma meantone in 1558. He also wrote about 1/4-comma and 1/3-comma versions. He believed all three ways could be used. He also studied the triad. A triad is a group of three notes played together. He was the first to say these groups are very important for harmony.

Zarlino's life began in a place called Chioggia. This town is near Venice in Italy. He studied with the Franciscans early in his life. He later joined this group of religious people. By 1536, he was a singer at Chioggia Cathedral. In 1539, he became a deacon and the main organ player. He moved to Venice in 1541 to study music. He studied with a famous teacher named Adrian Willaert. Later, Zarlino became the leader of music at Saint Mark's. This was a very special job in Italy.

Zarlino taught many famous people in the Venetian school of music. One of his students was Vincenzo Galilei. Vincenzo was the father of the scientist Galileo Galilei. Zarlino also taught musicians like Claudio Merulo and Giovanni Croce. He wrote many musical pieces during his life. He wrote 41 motets, which are religious songs. Most of these used five or six voices. He also wrote 13 secular works called madrigals. These were mostly for four or five voices. His music was published between 1549 and 1567.

His books spread across all of Europe. Students in France and Germany read his work. People in the Netherlands also studied his ideas. His writings helped start the early Baroque style of music. He used a system called the Senario to explain music. This used the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. This was different from the older Pythagorean system. He even explained why certain notes should not be played in a row. His ideas changed how people thought about music forever.
