Machaut created many different kinds of songs and poems. He worked with specific song forms called formes fixes. These included the rondeau, the virelai, and the ballade. He also wrote a type of song called a lai. His music often used special patterns called motifs. Some of his songs were short, while others were very complex. He was also very good at setting words to music. He used creative ways to make the music flow with the text.

His life began around the year 1300 in France. He was one of seven children. He was educated near the city of Reims. Later, he worked for King John I of Luxembourg. He traveled across Europe on trips with the King. He even visited the city of Prague. Machaut held important jobs in cities like Verdun, Arras, and Reims. He served many different rulers and noble families throughout his life. He lived through the Black Death, which was a very difficult time in Europe.

Machaut left behind a huge amount of work for us to study today. He wrote about 400 poems in total. These included 235 ballades and 76 rondeaux. He also wrote 39 virelais and 24 lais. His most famous religious work is the Messe de Nostre Dame. This is a complete setting of the Mass by one person. It was likely written in the early 1360s for Reims Cathedral. He also wrote many poems about courtly love. These stories often spoke about being a loyal lover.

Many things in Machaut's work connect to stories we know today. He wrote poems called dits, which are stories meant to be read aloud. Some of these stories used dreams and magical characters. One famous poem is called Le voir dit. It tells a story that might be about his own life. He even helped organize his own books. He wanted to make sure his music and poems stayed in a specific order. This careful work helped his art survive for hundreds of years.
