Dionysius Exiguus was a very smart monk. He lived a long time ago in the 6th century. He was born in a place called Scythia Minor. Later, he moved to Rome. He was great at many things. He could speak both Greek and Latin. He even wrote a book about math.

Dionysius is most famous for a new way to name years. This is called Anno Domini, or AD. Before this, people used a name from a mean ruler. Dionysius did not want to honor that man. He wanted to count years from the birth of Jesus. This helped people not worry about the end of the world.

He also made a special table for the church. This table helped people find the right date for Easter. He used math to make his rules. Most churches soon used his way to find the date. He also translated many old books from Greek into Latin. These books helped guide the church for a long time. It is amazing how much his work still helps us today!
