Scientists use many ways to find dates.

Some use radiocarbon dating. This looks at carbon in living things. Others use dendrochronology. This is a way to study tree rings. The rings show how old a tree is. Archaeologists also study old pottery. They look at the style of the pots. This helps them place items in a sequence. This is called seriation.

People also use the sky to find time. They look at eclipses. An eclipse is when the moon blocks the sun. These events help match stories to real years.

Historians work to synchronize events. This means they link different stories together. They want to see how one kingdom relates to another. Joseph Scaliger was a famous scholar. He helped link ancient history together. He even made the Julian Day. This is a scale used by many people today. It helps both historians and astronomers work together.
