Sylvester I was a leader of the church in Rome.

He was the bishop of Rome for many years. He served from the year 314 until 335. Very little is known about his life. We know he was the son of a man named Rufinus.

During his time, many big churches were built. These include Old St. Peter's Basilica. He also saw the building of the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Sylvester helped lead big meetings for the church. These meetings were called councils. One meeting was the Council of Nicaea in 325. These meetings helped people talk about their beliefs.

There are many old stories about Sylvester. Some stories say he helped a king named Constantine. One tale says the king was very sick. Sylvester helped heal him through a special baptism.

Other stories show him fighting a dragon.
