Basil did not want to live alone. Instead, he helped start a way of life for groups. These groups lived together, prayed, and worked as a community. This is called communal monasticism. He also cared deeply for people in need. During a famine, he organized a soup kitchen. He even built a large center called the Basiliad. This place had a hospital and a home for the poor.
