John Chrysostom was a very important leader in the early Christian church.

He served as the Archbishop of Constantinople during a busy time in history. Many people call him one of the Great Greek Church Fathers. He is also honored as a saint in the Catholic and Eastern churches. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, he is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs. This group includes him along with Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus. His life shows how powerful words and strong beliefs can change a city.

John's life began with a very deep study of words and faith.

He first studied rhetoric, which is the art of speaking well. He learned this from a teacher named Libanius in a school for sophists. Later, he studied theology, or the study of God, under Diodorus of Tarsus. John once lived as a hermit to focus entirely on his faith. He spent two years standing and memorizing the Bible. This hard way of living eventually hurt his health and forced him home.

He spent many years serving the people in the city of Antioch.

Between the years 386 and 397, he became very popular there. He spoke at the Golden Church, which was the city's cathedral. John was famous for his "homilies," which are speeches about the Bible. He taught people to use the Bible in practical ways for daily life. He often spoke about the need to help the poor and hungry. He believed that people should not waste wealth while others suffer.

In 397, John was named the archbishop of the huge city, Constantinople.

He worked hard to help the city by founding many hospitals. However, his honest way of speaking made many powerful people angry. He spoke against the expensive clothes and fancy parties of the rich. This made Empress Eudoxia, the wife of Emperor Arcadius, his enemy. A group of leaders held a meeting in 403 called the Synod of the Oak. They used his connections to other teachers to remove him from his job.

John's later years were very difficult because of his many enemies.

He was sent away into exile twice. His first banishment was to a place called Cucusus in Cappadocia. Later, he was sent even further away to the Caucasus in Abkhazia. Even while he was far from home, he wrote letters to help others. Pope Innocent I even sent people to try and help him. John died on September 14, 407, after a life of great struggle.
