He was born in a town called Imola. A local bishop named Cornelius helped teach and train him. Later, Emperor Valentinian III helped Peter become an archdeacon. Around the year 433, Pope Sixtus III made him the Bishop of Ravenna. Some stories say the Pope had a vision of a young man. He believed that young man was Peter, so he chose him for the job.

Peter wrote and spoke about many different things.

He explained the Apostles' Creed and the life of Jesus. He also wrote about Mary, the mother of Jesus. He spoke about the importance of the Eucharist and the season of Lent. Peter even wrote letters to people who disagreed with church rules. One such person was a man named Eutyches. In the year 451, a council kept a record of Peter's letter to him. Later, a leader named Archbishop Felix collected 176 of his talks.

Today, many different groups honor the life of Peter.
