Even though it is now inland, it stays connected to the Adriatic Sea. The Candiano Canal links the city to the water. Long ago, Ravenna was a very important seaport. It was a place where many people arrived by ship. Today, about 156,444 people live in the city.

The city has a very long and busy history. It began with the Umbri people in the 5th century BC. Later, the Romans took control in 89 BC. The Roman leader Octavian built a military harbor called Classis. This harbor was a key station for the Roman Imperial Fleet. Because of its swamps and marshes, the city was easy to defend. This made it a safe place for leaders to stay.

Ravenna was a capital for many different groups. In 402, Emperor Honorius moved his court there. For most of the 5th century, it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. After the empire fell, it became the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom. The king Theodoric built many grand buildings during his rule.

Later, the Byzantine Empire conquered the city in 540. It then served as the seat of the Byzantine governor.

The city is famous for its beautiful and old art. It is often called the "capital of mosaics." A mosaic is a picture made of tiny pieces of stone or glass. Many buildings have these bright decorations.

Eight of these buildings are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means they are special to the whole world. You can see amazing art in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe.

The city also changed hands many times between different rulers. It was part of the Papal States for a long time. Eventually, it became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in the mid-19th century. Its history shows how many different cultures have met in one place.
