Even though it is inland, it is near the Adriatic Sea. A canal called the Candiano Canal connects the city to the water. Long ago, Ravenna was a very important seaport.

The city has a very long history. It was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Later, it was the capital for the Ostrogothic Kingdom. It was also a capital for the Byzantine Empire.

Ravenna is famous for its beautiful art. Many buildings have mosaics. A mosaic is a picture made of tiny pieces of stone or glass. Because there are so many, people call it the "capital of mosaics."
