The lagoon lies between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers. Water flows between the islands through many canals. To get around, people use 472 different bridges.

This unique setting is why many call it the "City of Water."

How does a city live on water? The islands are separated by wide stretches of open water. Most people live on the mainland, but some live on the islands.

About 50,000 people live in the historical center of the city. Another 25,000 people live on other islands in the lagoon. The city is part of a large area called the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area. This whole area has about 2.6 million people.

Some historians believe the city began with refugees. These people fled from nearby Roman cities to escape invasions. They sought safety on the marshy islands of the lagoon. By the 9th century, Venice began to grow into a major power. It was the capital of the Republic of Venice for almost a thousand years.
