The Venetian Lagoon is a large, shallow bay of salt water. It sits in northern Italy within the Adriatic Sea.

This area is the largest wetland in the Mediterranean Basin. The lagoon stretches from the River Sile in the north to the Brenta in the south. It covers a very large surface area. Most of the lagoon is not deep water. About 80% of it is made of mud flats and salt marshes. Only about 11% is open water or canals. These canals are networks of channels that have been dredged.

Water moves into the lagoon through three main inlets. These are named Lido, Malamocco, and Chioggia.

Because it is at the end of a sea, the water level changes often. The most extreme changes are called spring tides. In Italy, people call this high water "acqua alta." This high water can regularly flood much of the city of Venice. The lagoon is also near the Marano-Grado Lagoon. Some people call that area the "twin sister" of the Venice lagoon.

This place was formed about six or seven thousand years ago. It happened after the Ice Age when the sea flooded the coastal plain. Over time, river sediments and sandbars helped shape the land.

People have lived here since ancient times. In the fifth and sixth centuries, the lagoon gave safety to people fleeing invaders. Later, it helped the Venetian Republic grow into a maritime empire. Humans have also changed the lagoon through many projects. They built canals and even made some islands entirely artificial to make them habitable.

Many different islands sit within these waters. Venice is the largest and sits at the center.

Other important islands include Murano, Chioggia, and Burano. Some islands, like the coastal ones, are actually made of dunes. The lagoon is also a place for work. People use it for a seaport, fishing, and fish farming. Some people even go there for hunting.

The lagoon is a busy home for many living things. Bottlenose dolphins sometimes swim in the water to find food.

However, the water faces some hard jobs. Large cruise ships can cause pollution and erosion. In the late 1980s, large blooms of algae were very bad for the area.

Scientists also study how new species enter the sea here. Luckily, seagrasses are growing back to help the ecosystem stay healthy.
