It sits inside the Adriatic Sea. This lagoon is the largest wetland in the Mediterranean Basin.

Most of the lagoon is made of mud flats and salt marshes. About 80% of the area is these shallow lands. Only 11% is open water. This water moves through canals, which are man-made channels.

Many islands sit in the water. The city of Venice is at the center. Other cities like Chioggia are also there.

The water level changes a lot. Sometimes, the water rises very high. These are called spring tides. In Italy, people call this "acqua alta." This high water can flood Venice.

People have lived here for a very long time. They use the lagoon for fishing and fish farming. Some people also hunt there. Large ships can cause pollution in the water. However, seagrasses are helping to fix the environment by growing back.
