It was a maritime republic, which means its power came from the sea. People often called it La Serenissima. This name means "The Most Serene." It was known for its steady and calm way of ruling. The city grew from many small islands in a lagoon.

It started in a small area called the Dogado. Later, it took over much of Northeast Italy and the Dalmatia coast. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, it reached its biggest size. At that time, it ruled islands like Crete and Cyprus. It also held many ports in the eastern Mediterranean.

Long ago, the islands were part of the Byzantine Empire. In the 9th century, the Duchy of Venice began to rise. A leader called a doge led the people from the island of Rialto. In 812, Agnello Participazio moved the capital to Rivoalto. This helped start the city we know as Venice today.

Venice even made a special treaty with the Carolingian Empire in 840.

Running a republic is different than running a kingdom.

In a kingdom, one family usually rules everything. In Venice, the doge was an elected leader. He was not a king with total power. Many groups helped run the state through different assemblies. The Great Council helped make laws for the people.

Other groups like the Council of Ten handled legal matters. This kept the government organized for a long time.

Venice faced many hard times and wars. It fought a long struggle with the city of Genoa.

Later, it fought many wars against the Ottoman Empire. These wars lasted until the year 1718. Eventually, French troops led by Napoleon arrived in the area.

Following a treaty called the Treaty of Campo Formio, the Republic ended. Its lands were divided among other powers like the Habsburg monarchy. Even though the Republic ended, its history remains very important.
