This republic was a powerful center for sea trade. It lasted from 1358 until 1808. The people of Ragusa had a very special motto. In Latin, it said, "Liberty is not well sold for all the gold." This meant they valued their freedom more than wealth.

Ragusa grew by controlling many lands and islands. Its territory included the mainland coast from Neum to the Prevlaka peninsula. It also ruled the Pelješac peninsula and islands like Lastovo and Mljet.

They even had smaller islands like Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. In the 15th century, they briefly held the islands of Korčula, Brač, and Hvar. The republic was organized into different parts like cities, counties, and captaincies. Local leaders were chosen by a group called the Major Council.

The history of the city began a long time ago. Some say survivors from the city of Epidaurum founded it in the 7th century. They moved to a small island called Lausa to stay safe. Later, the Byzantine Empire ruled the area for many years. The city also faced many hard times, like a long siege in 866. In 1348, the Black Death arrived and many people died.

Ragusa became truly independent in 1358. This happened because of the Treaty of Zadar. This treaty forced Venice to give up its claims to Dalmatia.

After that, the city recognized the rule of King Louis I of Hungary. This allowed the local nobles to rule with very little interference. The republic reached its most successful time in the 1400s and 1500s. During this peak, they traded many goods like silver, wax, and salt.

By the end of its history, Ragusa was a busy place. It had a population of about 30,000 people. Only 5,000 of those people lived inside the city walls.

They even had a small colony far away in Goa, India. This colony was called Sao Braz and was named after Saint Blaise. Saint Blaise was the patron saint of the city. Finally, Napoleon's French Empire conquered the republic in 1808. This event brought an end to the long history of the Republic of Ragusa.
