It grew strong by trading goods across the sea. The city acted as a gateway between central Italy and the Orient. Ancona had many different groups of people living together. These included Greeks, Albanians, Armenians, Turks, and Jewish communities.

The Greeks were a large group of merchants who came from places like the Ionian Islands. This variety of people helped the city become a major center for business.

Trade worked through a large network of ships and warehouses. Anconitan merchants were active in many far-off ports. They had special areas in places like Constantinople and Alexandria.

In Constantinople, they even had their own church called Saint Stephen. By 1261, they were granted a chapel in the famous St. Sophia. Merchants brought back valuable items like spices and textiles. These goods were often sorted by merchants from cities like Lucca and Florence. This constant movement of goods kept the city's economy very strong.

Ancona's journey to independence took many years. The city was part of the Papal States starting in the year 774. Around the year 1000, the Holy Roman Empire also had influence there. However, the city began to gain its own freedom during the 11th century. It was ruled by an oligarchy of six Elders. These leaders were elected by three parts of the city named S. Pietro, Porto, and Capodimonte.

Even though they were under the Papal States, the city managed its own affairs.

To manage their wealth, the republic made its own money. In the 12th century, they began minting coins without asking for permission. Their most famous silver coin was called the agontano.

This coin was about 18 to 22 mm wide. Later, they even made a gold coin known as the Ancona Ducat. The city also had special laws for the sea and customs. These rules helped keep trade fair and organized for everyone involved.

Ancona was also a place of great art and discovery. The city saw a movement called the Adriatic Renaissance. Famous people like the painter Carlo Crivelli lived and worked there.
