It is the third-largest city in its region. It serves as a main hub for business and travel.

Learning and science have always been important here. The University of Padua was founded way back in 1222. This makes it one of the oldest universities on Earth. Many famous thinkers have walked its halls. For example, Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei both studied or taught there. In 1610, Galileo used a homemade telescope to see the moons of Jupiter.

The history of Padua goes back a very long time. Some traditions say a Trojan prince named Antenor founded it in 1183 BC.

While experts think the town started later, it is still very ancient. Long ago, it was a major center for the Veneti people. Later, it became part of the Roman Republic. In the Roman era, the city was known for its thick wool and fine horses. It was even one of the wealthiest cities in Italy outside of Rome.

Many things have changed the face of the city over the years. During the time of the Roman Empire, the city was quite powerful. You can still see the remains of a Roman amphitheater today.

Later, the city faced many hard times. It was attacked by the Huns and the Lombards. These wars caused many buildings to be damaged or burned. Even after these struggles, the people rebuilt their homes. You can see the unfinished façade of the Padua Cathedral as a sign of its long history.

Padua is also a place of great beauty and nature. It is home to the world's oldest Botanical Garden. This garden is so special that it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city also has famous frescoes, which are paintings done directly on walls. You can find these in the city center at places like the Scrovegni Chapel. These art pieces are also protected by UNESCO. Between the old science, the art, and the history, there is always something new to discover.
