It sits high up in a hilly landscape. Many valleys surround the city, such as the Arbia valley to the south. The city is a busy place with about 52,991 people living there. It is the 12th-largest city in its region. Many visitors come to see its historic center. This center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it has many special buildings.

Long ago, the city grew into a very powerful place. It was once a major center for banking and trade. In fact, Siena is home to the oldest bank in the world. This bank is named Monte dei Paschi and has stayed in business since 1472. The city also became famous for making wool. It sat along important trade routes that reached across Europe. This helped the city become very wealthy during the Middle Ages.

There are many old stories about how Siena began. One legend says two brothers named Senius and Aschius founded it. They were the sons of Remus and fled from Rome. They even brought a statue of a she-wolf with them.

This wolf became a symbol for the whole town. Other history tells us the Etruscan people lived there a long time ago. A Roman town called Saena Iulia was also built on this site. Later, a man named Sant'Ansano helped the city become Christian. He is now known as the patron saint of Siena.

Siena is also a wonderful place for art and learning. The University of Siena was started in 1240. This makes it one of the oldest universities still running today. Many famous painters like Duccio and Simone Martini lived here.

One of the most exciting things in Siena is the Palio. This is a traditional horse race held twice every year. It takes place in a large square called the Piazza del Campo.

Seventeen different neighborhoods, called contrade, compete in the race. Each neighborhood has its own mascot, like a dragon or a snail. The winners receive a painted banner as a trophy. It is a very big event that many people watch on TV.
