The Chianina is a very special kind of cattle from Italy.

It is known as the tallest and heaviest breed of cattle in the world. These animals have beautiful white coats. Their skin, noses, and hooves are black. Even their tongues and eyelids are black. When calves are first born, they are a wheat color. They turn white after a few months. People value this breed because the meat is very high quality. In Italy, it is used to make a famous meal called bistecca alla fiorentina.

These cattle are very strong and useful. Long ago, farmers used them as draught animals to pull heavy loads. They were great for working on steep hills. They worked in pairs using a neck yoke. Today, machines do most of this work. However, you can still see Chianina oxen in Italian processions like the Palio di Siena. In North America, some people even train them for ox-pulling contests. They are very tough animals that can handle heat and sunlight well.

The history of the Chianina goes back a very long time. They come from the Valdichiana and Tiber Valley areas. People have raised them in Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio for at least 2,200 years. A writer named Columella wrote about huge white oxen in Umbria around 55 AD. In the past, breeders kept private lists of their animals. Later, official groups were formed to keep better records. One group of breeders started a society in 1899 to create a herd-book.

There are many interesting facts and numbers about this breed. In 1935, the Italian government set official rules for what a Chianina should look like. Since 1931, breeders have chosen animals with longer bodies and more muscle. In 2010, there were 11,000 registered cattle in Italy. Most of them lived in Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. By 2025, the world population was estimated at over 11,000 animals. While most live in Italy, they are also found in Argentina, Mexico, and South Africa.

Today, the Chianina is a world breed. People share them with other countries by sending embryos or semen. For example, Chianina semen was sent to Australia in 1973. In the United States, they cross-breed them with British beef breeds. This helps create meat that fits what people want to eat. They are also used to help other cattle grow faster. This is because Chianina cattle are very good at staying healthy against insects and disease.
