These animals are most famous in Tuscany. Many live near a place called Monte Amiata. This mountain is in the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. You can also find them in Liguria and Campania. They are one of eight local donkey breeds. The Italian ministry of agriculture recognizes them as important.

These donkeys have a very distinct look. Their coats are the color of mouse-grey. They have dark stripes on their legs. You can also see stripes on their shoulders and back. These stripes form a cross shape on their bodies. They are a medium size. They are bigger than Sarda donkeys. But they are smaller than Martina Franca donkeys. They rarely grow taller than 140 cm at the withers.

An Amiatina donkey is a very tough animal. They are known as a rustic breed. This means they are strong and hardy. They can find food on harsh, marginal land. This is land that might be difficult for other animals. Most of these donkeys live free range. They roam in open spaces to find what they need.

These donkeys have a difficult history. In the early 1900s, they were very common. Before the Second World War, there were over 8,000 in two provinces. This included Grosseto and Perugia. After the war, they almost died out. In 1956, a group in Pisa began breeding them. They worked to help the population grow again.

People have worked hard to save them. A breeders' association was started in 1993. In 1995, only 89 donkeys were registered. By 2006, the number grew to 1,082. About 60% of them live in Tuscany. In 2007, the FAO called them endangered. This means they are still at risk. We can learn much from how they survive.
