Many live in Tuscany. Some live in Liguria and Campania too. They are linked to Monte Amiata. This is a mountain in central Italy.

These donkeys have a mouse-grey coat. You can see dark stripes on their legs. They also have stripes on their shoulders and back. These stripes form a cross shape. They are a medium size. They are bigger than Sarda donkeys. But they are smaller than Martina Franca donkeys. They rarely grow taller than 140 cm at the withers. The withers are the high part of a donkey's back.

Amiatina donkeys are very strong. They can find food on harsh land. Most live free range. This means they roam in the open.

These donkeys almost died out after World War Two. In 1995, only 89 were left. A group in Pisa began to breed them. In 2006, there were 1,082 registered donkeys. About 60% of them live in Tuscany. In 2007, the FAO called them endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing.
