Hinny

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A hinny is a special kind of animal. It is a hybrid between a horse and a donkey. This happens when a male horse mates with a female donkey. We call a male horse a stallion. We call a female donkey a jenny. This is the opposite of a mule. A mule comes from a male donkey and a female horse. Hinnies are much less common than mules.

How a hinny looks depends on its parents. It shows something called hybrid vigour. This means the mix can be very strong. The front part and head look like the father. The back part and tail look like the mother. Hinnies are usually smaller than mules. They have shorter ears and lighter heads. Their tails are bushy like a donkey's tail.

Scientists study why hinnies are so unique. They look at genomic imprinting. This is a way that genes are passed down. It is part of something called epigenetic inheritance. This process changes how the animal looks. It also changes the animal's temperament. Temperament is how an animal behaves. Hinnies act differently than mules do.

Most reports say that hinnies are sterile. This means they cannot have babies of their own. A male hinny might try to mate. However, his testicles only make malformed spermatozoa. These are cells that cannot work right. One interesting event happened in Henan, China. In 1981, a mother animal had a baby. People are not sure if she was a mule or a hinny.

You might hear old stories about a creature called a jumart. European folklore says this was a mix of a horse and a cow. Many of these jumarts were actually hinnies. It is easy to see why people were confused. Hinnies are a rare and interesting part of the animal world. They show us how different parents create new things. Learning about them helps us understand living things better.
