Many people around the world keep them as livestock for many different reasons. We use them for their meat, their wool, and their skins. Their milk is also very important and is often used to make cheese.

In the year 2022, there were more than 1.1 billion goats living on our planet. A huge number of these, about 150 million, lived in India.

Goats have a very special way of eating and digesting their food. They are called browsers, which means they look for plants to chew on. They are very curious and might even taste things like paper or clothing!

To digest this food, they use a four-chambered stomach. This stomach has four parts named the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum, and the abomasum. As they grow, their rumen gets bigger so they can absorb more nutrients. This system helps them turn many kinds of plants into energy.

Humans first began to domesticate goats about 10,000 years ago. This likely happened in Iran, with early remains found in a place called Ganj Dareh.

Scientists believe their ancestors were wild goats called bezoar ibex from the Zagros Mountains. Early farmers kept them for milk, meat, and even their dung for fuel. They also used goat bones, hair, and sinew to make tools and clothing. Over many centuries, goats became a vital part of human life across many lands.

There are many interesting facts about how a goat's body works. Most goats have two horns made of living bone covered in a protein called keratin. These horns help them defend themselves or show dominance.

Their eyes are also unique because they have horizontal, slit-shaped pupils. This shape helps them see well during both the day and the night. It also gives them a wide view to spot predators coming from the side. Most goats live between 15 and 18 years, though some reach 24.

Goats are very different from sheep in several ways. While sheep often stay in tight groups, goats like to spread out when they graze. They are also much better at climbing than most other animals.

Some goats are even able to climb trees to find food! They are also very smart and can be as clever as dogs. Studies show they even try to communicate with people to ask for help with hard jobs.
