Alpine goats are famous for being great milk makers. These medium to large goats are very popular in the dairy industry. People use their milk to make tasty things like cheese and ice cream. You can even use it to make butter or soap.

They are known for having a docile temperament. This means they are generally calm and easy to work with. They are also very hardy animals. This allows them to adapt to almost any kind of climate.

There are a few ways these goats work in a dairy farm. To get the best milk, a goat needs to be healthy. A goat should weigh at least 135 pounds to produce the best amount. When they reach this weight, they can produce 2,134 pounds of milk per lactation.

Four things help them stay productive. They need good air, dry beds, clean food, and clean water. They also need minimal labor and very little disturbance.

The history of these goats begins in the French Alps. The original type is called the Purebred French Alpine.

When these goats were brought to the United States, a new type emerged. These are called American Alpines. They look and act much like the French version. However, they might have different markings because of crossbreeding. The American Dairy Goat Association has specific rules for them. For example, they fault goats that are all white.

Many interesting numbers describe the Alpine goat. A mature goat weighs about 61 kg or 135 lbs. Females are usually over 76 cm tall at the shoulder.

Their milk has an average fat content of 3.4%. This milk has more sugar than milk from a cow. It also has 2.3 grams of protein in every 250 ml. A female's pregnancy, called gestation, lasts about 150 days on average. Most Alpine goats have twins when they give birth.

Learning about goat milk is a lot like learning about cow milk. You can use it for many of the same dairy products.

But there are some differences to notice. Alpine milk has less fat than milk from a Nubian goat. It also has different protein levels than cow milk. Once the milk is collected, it must be chilled right away. This stops bacteria from growing too fast and spoiling the milk. Cold milk lasts three to four weeks in a fridge. If you freeze it, it can last much longer.
